Cut the comments that only restate the code
Roughly half of what this branch added was narration — docblocks on
self-evident helpers, notes repeating the assertion below them, design
rationale that belongs in the PR. What is left answers why: the marker is
a control character so it cannot collide with a label, a round parks on
one prompt, the resume target comes from the record and not the request.
